The beginning of our "Trip of a Lifetime"

We began our South America/Antarctica cruise with a few days in Rio.  We stayed at the Hotel Mar Ipanema which was only 2 blocks from the famous beach.

It was a few days before Christmas, so there were lots of holiday decorations.

There was some kind of a nativity contest in a park near our hotel.  We loved the combinations:  penguins, snowmen and camels; and Santas and the baby Jesus.

The weather looked good the day after we arrived, so we went up to Corcovado.

It was quite clear so the views were incredible!
Our hotel was across the street from the tall white building in the middle of this picture.

Take note - there is a Christmas tree in the middle of this lake.  You'll see photos of it later.

Next we went to the Jardim Botanico.

Their Japanese garden had huge tropical lily pads from the Amazon.

This row of palm trees was planted over 100 years ago.

We had a view of Corcovado from the terrace where we ate lunch.
Ipanema beach at sunset.
Yes, you can buy a bikini on the beach.

It was 28 degrees at 9:38 PM - that's 83 Farenheit!
It was really hot and humid every day we were in Rio!
I took these photos from our hotel room - the coolest we ever saw it was 25 degrees.
